Alternator Short Circuit Test

To test for battery discharge due to an alternator internal fault or incompatible polarity of an alternator and battery:

Remove ALL wires from the output terminal of the alternator.

Connect an appropriate 6 or 12 volt test light between the alternator output terminal and passenger side post of the junction box.

NO LIGHT indicates the alternator is OK and compatable with the battery polarity.

LIGHT ON indicates a short circuit exists in the alternator or a reverse connection exists at the battery.

Resolve any discharge condition then remove the test light and reconnect the nornal wires to the alternator before road use.
